How to Get an Acting Agent With No Experience

SPUNK13 · 7 min read · Updated July 2026

An agent submits you for auditions and negotiates deals in exchange for a commission on work they help you book. They're a business partner — so they sign people they believe they can make money with. Here's how to give yourself a real shot.

Have your materials ready first

Before you submit: a strong, current headshot, a clean resume, and ideally a short self-tape or reel showing you can act. Agents can't sell what they can't see.

Submit the way agencies ask

Research legitimate agencies that represent your type and are open to new talent. Follow each agency's submission instructions exactly — the right materials, the right subject line, no mass "Dear Sir/Madam" blasts. A referral from a class, coach, or castmate dramatically improves your odds.

Spot the scams

Legitimate agents take a commission after you book work. Be wary of anyone who charges upfront "registration" fees, requires their specific (expensive) photographer, or guarantees roles. Real representation makes money when you do.

If you get a meeting

Treat it like the audition it is: be on time, prepared, easy to work with, and clear about your goals and availability. They're assessing whether you're castable and professional to represent.

You don't need an agent to start

Plenty of early work — self-tapes, UGC, voice-over, indie and student films — you can book yourself while you build the credits that make agents say yes. Get discovered on 13.actor in the meantime.

FAQ

Should an agent charge me upfront?
No. Legitimate agents earn a commission after you book paid work. Upfront fees, mandatory pricey photographers, or guaranteed roles are red flags.

Can I act without an agent?
Yes. Self-tapes, UGC, voice-over, and indie/student films can all be booked directly while you build credits toward representation.
