Self-tapes are now the default first round for most film, TV, and commercial casting. The good news: you don't need a studio. You need clean framing, even light, clear sound, and a reader. Here's the exact setup casting directors expect in 2026.
1. Frame it like a headshot in motion
Shoot in landscape (horizontal) unless the breakdown says otherwise. Frame from mid-chest to just above the head — a loose medium close-up. Put the lens at eye level, not below (no up-the-nose angles). Leave a small amount of headroom and center yourself. Use a plain, mid-tone background: a blue-grey or neutral wall reads best on camera and keeps the focus on your face.
2. Light your face evenly
Face a window during the day, or use one soft key light slightly to the side and a weaker fill on the other side to soften shadows. Avoid overhead room lights that cast shadows under the eyes. 3. Get the sound right
Bad audio kills more tapes than bad video. Record in a small, soft room (bedrooms with curtains and carpet beat echoey living rooms). Get the mic as close as you reasonably can off-frame — a phone lav mic or a USB mic just out of shot both work. Turn off fans, AC, and anything that hums.
4. Use a real reader
Have someone read the other lines just off to one side of the lens, quietly and evenly, so you can play to a point near the camera. Your reader should be softer than you and never louder. If you're alone, a scene partner on speakerphone at low volume works in a pinch.
5. Slate cleanly

6. Do 2–3 takes, pick one
Give yourself distinct choices across takes rather than chasing "perfect." Editors and casting can smell over-rehearsed. Trim the top and tail so the file starts on your first beat, and export at 1080p.
7. Name and send the file correctly
Label the file exactly how the breakdown asks — usually LastName_FirstName_Role.mp4. Send via the link they specify (or an unlisted upload), never a giant email attachment. Hit the deadline; late tapes often don't get watched.
